  • Last Friday morning in Draper, Utah a 19-year-old DUI driver Steven Ray Becky purposely swerved to hit an 11-year-old girl who was riding around a residential neighborhood on an electric scooter.

After hitting the girl his car hit a rock and overturned into someone’s front yard. After getting out of the vehicle Becky charged the girl and told her “we all have to die sometime”.

Becky then tried to flee the scene of the crime but was restrained by someone in the neighboorhood.

    According to Fox 13:

Responding officers said the suspect’s attitude and statement to the girl led them to believe he’d intentionally hit her, the Tribune reported. Becky later admitted to being high on Xanax, marijuana, LSD and psychedelic mushrooms, according to a probable cause statement.

Police Chief John Eining told reporters Friday that the girl was pushed off her electric scooter by a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta that was driving on the wrong side of the road. The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. Friday in Draper, a suburban community about 20 miles south of Salt Lake City.

“This is not what I would describe as veered into the gal or drifted into the gal,” Eining said. “My description would be turned into the gal.”

The girl suffered a head injury and a fractured hip and was taken to a hospital in serious condition, Fox 13 reported. Becky was taken into custody and charged with suspicion of attempted criminal homicide, and DUI with serious bodily injury.

    According to KSL:

The horrific scene played out in front of the home of Clark Santos, who was awakened Friday morning by smartphone alerts from his security system. He immediately looked out the window, where he saw a car upside down on his lawn and a young girl lying hurt next to the driveway.

As first responders arrived, Santos realized his security camera may have caught something.

“I looked at it, reviewed it, and I saw the whole thing happen,” Santos said.

Standing in his yard Friday afternoon, the marks from the crash reconstruction investigation still visible on his driveway, Santos described what happened in the video.

“I saw the car coming from the left side of the road, which is unusual, coming straight at her,” he said. “(It) hit her, flipped her on the windshield, and then she landed right about here, and then she just started screaming. It was tough to stomach.”

Santos was quick to share his video with police. He said the incident has left him thinking about his own children.

“I warn my kids all the time, be careful, just because a car is coming up doesn’t mean it can see you,” he said.

Becky was booked in the Utah County Jail for investigation of criminal homicide and DUI with serious bodily injuries.

This 19-year-old clearly needs some serious help and rehabilitation. Let’s all hope that the little girl has a speedy recovery and moves on quickly from this incident.

One thing to remember from this story that it is still possible to be charged with DUI while under the use of illegal drugs or prescription drugs and that the penalties and fines from a “Drug DUI” are just as severe if not worse.
